A UNIQUE BOND: The triumph of compassionate values
Dear Community Member:
On November 7, 2008, Ryan Abraham, the four-year-old son of Gary and Natasha Abraham from Orange County, California, was diagnosed with a very rare condition called Hemophagocytic Limphohistiocytosis (HLH) – a life threatening disorder of the immune system.
In December 2008, they decided to transfer him to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
“We arrived in Cincinnati on Dec 17. We learned about My Family on Call from our Rabbi. Since we arrived, they were here to help and support us. Somebody called and immediately started organizing people to help at the hospital with Ryan. They helped us to find a house and a school for our daughter. Equally or more important was the emotional support just knowing that people were here to help.”
On September 7, 2009, Ryan’s family reported in their journal, “Our family support in Cincinnati was organized by the Jewish Federation’s ‘My Family on Call’ committee. The people who helped us through the most difficult days we will ever know have created a unique bond with our family and especially with Ryan.”
“Ryan’s care and healing has really been a team effort and a key part of that team was the community.”
This holiday let’s rededicate ourselves to the real meaning of Hanukkah. Together, we can bring warmth and light to people in need in our Jewish community.
One gift to Federation feeds the hungry, helps the unemployed, and builds community. Please consider including a gift to Federation on your Hanukkah gift list. Every dollar touches a life.
Watch Ryan’s story and learn how your gift makes a difference. Happy Hanukkah!
